The Night College was needed  for the students those who were working in day time and willing for higher education. Before 1989, such kind of facility was not available in Solapur. Maratha Samaj Seva Mandal realized this need and started Chhatrapati Shivaji Night College of Arts &Commerce, Solapur  in 1989.

           The first batch of this college came out in 1991-92. At the same time students were demanding  for B.A. Special in Political Science. So B.A. Political Science Department was started in 1992. There are 11 talukas in Solapur District. Almost each taluka has a SeniorCollege. However Barshi, Pandharpur, and SolapurCity offered Specialization in Political Studies at B.A. III level. Except these, no other college had the Department of Political Science. Hence a large number of students were deprived of this specialization. All these colleges were day colleges.So our Maratha SamajSevaMandal decided to start the Dept. of Political Science in the degree college. It was a historical decision because ours is the only NightCollege  in the whole of district. It opened a new path for the students of Political Science. It was a golden opportunity for all students. 

           In Solapur city Political Science at P.G. level was in three colleges up to 1992, gradually these departments were closed permanently. So students had to go ShivajiUniversity, Kolhapur which was 250 Kms away from Solapur. It was not possible to all the students. So many students remained deprived of this education . In between students’ organizations demanded to start M.A. Classes in Shivaji University P.G. center at Solapur   but because of technical problem it was not fulfilled. 

          For that our college was continuously taking efforts to start these classes. In 2004, the independent University for Solapur District was started. At the same time our college gone through NAAC Accreditation, in that it was recommended to start P.G. classes. By considering this point in 2005 our Institution started P.G. classes. In the beginning it was only one centre in the university. Because of this facility the students got justice who was away from the education.

•  The Department of Political Science endeavors to produce such students  who are trained in science of Politics and Administration in order to create free, just and humane society.

Mission:

•  The Department of Political Science strives to create such citizens in society who would contribute to the goal of establishment of free democratic , secular and egalitarian society in India through pursuit of  academic excellence in teaching, research and extension activities.

Goals:
1. To impart training in Political Science to the students of the University/College in major branches of Political Science in order to equip them in academic and professional capability.
2. To undertake teaching, research and extension programs to study modern Indian Politics and Political Ideas of Indian Political Thinkers.
3. To encourage research in the socio-political problems faced by the society and suggest remedies.
4. To critically study the functioning of democratic institutions in India including local self institutions, both rural and urban. 
5. To analyze and study the functioning of Public Administration in the context of socio-political problems created by developmental processes and globalization.
6. To educate students about the human rights and duties, in order to create socially responsibilities citizens. 
7. To critically study socio-political movements and civil society activism in Maharashtra.
8. To study political thought in India both an ancient and modern through comparative perspective with its contemporary relevance.
